Janská Chapel (The Chapel of St John)

The Chapel of St John the Baptist was built on the initiative of Jan Mořic Dreyschock on Janský Hill in the year 1714.

In the vicinity of the chapel there was also a hermitage and a miraculous well. The Chapel was damaged during the Silesian Wars, especially during the fire of 1745. Simple protective constructions with wooden mounds were even built in its vicinity. In 1782, the Chapel of St John was deconsecrated by order of Emperor Josef II and sold to private hands. It was re-opened and consecrated only in 1811. On 27 June, 1866, Prussian and Austrian troops fought around and inside the chapel, and bullets left traces here that can be still seen today. In 1879-80, after the military monuments had been removed from the abolished town cemetery the vicinity of the chapel became a military cemetery of the 1866 War. In the chapel there is a small military museum.
