It was the only Austrian victory in the 1866 War on the northern battle field. To honour this military leader and commemorate this glorious victory, two years after the Battle of Trutnov a seventeen-metre high, cast-iron, obelisk-shaped memorial was unveiled on Šibeník Hill. The names of all of the fallen Austrian offices and the numbers of those fallen in the individual regimens are stated on the Gablenz Memorial. The victory in the Battle of Trutnov was paid dearly: the Austrian toll of almost 5,000 soldiers was four times as high as that of the Prussians. General Gablenz put an end to his life of his own accord in Zurich in January 1874. In September 1905, his remains were brought from the Zurich cemetery to Trutnov and laid in the crypt of the memorial. The original tombstone was brought together with the remains.
