Janská Chapel (the Chapel of St John)

The Chapel of St John the Baptist was built on the initiative of Jan Mořic Dreyschock on Janský Hill in 1714.

Near the chapel there was also a hermitage, and a miraculous well. The Chapel was damaged during the Silesian Wars, especially during the fire of 1745. Simple protective constructions were even built in the vicinity of the chapel. In 1782, the Chapel of St John was desecrated by order of Emperor Josef II and sold to private hands. It was reopened and consecrated again in 1811. On 27 June, 1866, fighting took place around and inside the chapel, so bullets left traces here that can be still seen today. In 1879-80, the vicinity of the chapel became a military cemetery of the 1866 War after the military monuments had been brought here from the abolished town cemetery. Nowadays the chapel houses a small military museum.
